The Toppel
Center is a skilled nursing facility that replaced some of the
original beds at the Miami Jewish Home & Hospital campus. It
forms part of an interconnected quadrangle of buildings that provides
protected outdoor open space and circulation for the elderly.
Nursing substations allow a flexibly sized nursing
unit which can vary from ten to forty beds. This organization
of the service spaces allows for maximum versatility as the needs
of the resident population change over time.
The complex is three stories and is built of
concrete and stucco. A three-story atrium divides the chassis
of the main nursing home from the physical therapy rehab center,
and frames a “rehabilitation garden”. Residents
seeking to improve their walking skills can wonder through a garden
which offers varying walking surfaces and slopes.
The architecture is reminiscent of the Miami
Beach Art Deco Style.
