Amsterdam House
is a 72,000 square foot addition to a distinguished, non-profit
skilled nursing facility in New York City. Immediately adjacent
is a 4,000 square foot historic Croton Aquaduct Waterworks building
which was converted into an adult day health center. The
addition as well as the granite, pyramid-roofed waterworks, blend
beautifully with the prewar university neighborhood.
Amsterdam House is designed
in traditional Morningside Heights fashion. Using new technology,
traditional brick is cast into concrete panels with exposed concrete
molded into delicate quoins. The mid section is blended
brick and the three upper stories are limestone-colored precast
and brick. The
ground floor features a dining room pub, library, activity room,
conference room, and garden workshop. Alongside the new addition
is a linear garden facing Amsterdam Avenue.
