This
seventy-one unit senior housing community is the first phase of
a 58 acre campus for the aging in Middlebury, CT. This independent
living center also includes a central commons and support service.
The guiding principle of these seventy-one units
is to encourage tenants to age gracefully-in-place. The units,
corridors, east and west lobbies and central commons were all designed
with that premise.
This is the first residence in the town designed
exclusively for aging. A joint enterprise of the town, and
New Samaritan, a non-profit housing corporation, purchased the
land for the development. The center will ultimately include
a wide array of housing alternatives on the lovely hillside site. This
first phase, alongside Straw Pond, offers adaptable one bedroom
units.
The pair of two story
residences of 38 and 39 units frame a one story commons. All
common facilities (dining and meeting rooms) face Straw Pond
and a patio on the south edge of the pond.
