Lapham Community Center—Two Additions and Reconstruction |

Two new additions transform this 1918 “cottage” into an enhanced senior center within the Waveny Park in New Canaan, Connecticut. On the west side, a new dining hall addition doubles the size of the dining room, while on the east side a new wing features a large lecture hall and exercise room. By regrading the land on the south side, it was possible to provide full height arched windows in the lower level instructional and recreational spaces. To respect the scale and character of the existing cottage, the large spaces have been embedded within a double gable volume. An alternating treatment of stone and stucco with barseboard is featured, while all the details and proportions recall the design of the original building.
