For 125 years The
Fresh Air Fund, in Fishkill, NY has provided underprivileged children
from New York City the opportunity to learn valuable life lessons
in a stunning, picturesque natural environment.
The two oldest camps are Camp ABC and Camp Tommy. Their
reconstruction entailed the building of 32 new structures including
2 dining halls, 3 program buildings, infirmaries, and camper cabins. Significant
improvements were made to the water, electrical, and sewer infrastructure.
The reconstruction of the camps created an
opportunity to develop an architectural theme based on Adirondack
Camp design of the 19th century. Shallow roof pitches, deep
overhangs and the use of wood shakes, and exposed “peel pole” framing
create a unified character among the many diverse structures.
