The
Daniel Webster School, built in 1929, has a distinguished history
in elementary education in New Rochelle. Its innovative programs
were crammed into subdivided classrooms within the existing building.
The new 16,000 sf addition includes a new center for the talented
and gifted, as well as lunchroom, kitchen, and play area. In
addition, 20 existing classrooms were restored.
The new building matches the
existing in height, scale, exterior style, and interior character. Great
effort was made to maintain the historical feeling of all the spaces. Though
modern materials cannot easily emulate 1929 craftsmanship, the
addition forms a seamless whole, while introducing a new student
entrance, a garden court, and bus drop-off.
