Mamaroneck Avenue Elementary School — New Classroom Wing

Built in the 1920’s, this new, two-story, ten classroom wing added 20,000 square feet to Mamaroneck Avenue Elementary School. The building was expanded three times over eighty years; therefore, the architect and client decided to laminate new construction against a high gym wall. The new, sand-colored brick facade matches the 1920’s portion. The rock face brick detail accentuates the horizontal scale of the addition.

Now the youngest children are in their own domain, which includes a sky lit, two story commons and matching window shapes at the entrance awnings to classrooms. The teachers’ requirement for activity “corners” and “learn via play” zones resulted in classrooms with two ceiling heights, 12 feet on the daylight side and 9 feet on the corridor side, allowing for eighteen students in up to six learning zones. A new entrance facilitates parent drop-off of the youngest children.
