The
middle school is an impressive “castellated Gothic” structure
on a rocky hillside built in 1926. With growing enrollment
and changes in curriculum, fourteen classrooms and a new gym needed
to be added. Two separate additions were required to accommodate
the program.
The fundamental challenge
was the search for a “rockface” material both compatible
with the character of ashlar granite of the original school,
and matching the decorative cast stone work so unique throughout
the building. These details enhance not only the existing
structure but the new addition as well. As proscribed by the
client, the additions are on the side and back, so that from
the entrance road, the 1926 presence remains. |
